Moshe Arens speaking at the Menachem Begin Heritage
Center at the launch of the English version of his book,
"Flags Over the Warsaw Ghetto."
JERUSALEM, February 16, 2012--Veritas vincit, Latin for the truth prevails, was the theme last night at the Menachem Begin Heritage Center at the English-language book launch of Flags over the Warsaw Ghetto by former Defense Minister Moshe Arens, which sheds new light on the story of the Warsaw Ghetto uprising.
The event was attended by Arens, Minister Without Portfolio Menachem Begin and former Knesset speaker and Holocaust Survivor, Professor Shevach Weiss.
As in many other areas of Zionist history, the followers of Ze’ev Jabotinsky were excluded from the historical record of the Warsaw Ghetto uprising because of their non-socialist orientation and the deligitmization which was levied against the Jabotinsky’s Revisionist Movement. In the book, Arens explains the role of the Jabotinsky’s followers in the uprising and how and why they were excluded.

At the launch, Arens explained that the title of the book refers to the fact that it was the Jabotinsky military organization which had in fact raised the Polish and Jewish (now Israeli) flags over Maranoski Square, an act of political symbolism which the Germans who sought to put down the uprising attached great importance to.
While Arens saluted the courage of the socialist Zionists who fought in the Ghetto and who excluded Jabotinsky’s followers both in their operations and in their retelling of the story, Arens compared the cover up of the information to those of totalitarian societies such as 1984, citing the slogan of the ruling party described in the novel, “He who controls the past controls the future and he who controls the present controls the past.”
Benny Begin, whose father Menachem Begin was heir to Jabotinsky’s movement and idealogical legacy, cited his father’s triumphant and optimistic citation of the Latin saying Veritas vincit. Begin praised Arens diligence in uncovering the true history of the uprising.
Flags over the Warsaw Ghetto is published by Gefen Publishing House and is available on Amazon.
